INTERVIEW with Dave McMullin, Monitor Engineer, about selection of REMIC LB Live for OneRepublic

The sound of the REMIC is the most natural sound I have ever heard from a classically stringed instrument.

It sounds like your ear is right up against the body of the instrument and you are hearing the wood and you are hearing the warmth, and that honestly is the reason why we went with it.

Dave McMullin, Monitor Engineer for OneRepublic uses the REMIC C5300 LB Live to mic the cello. He had mainly two challenges: 120 channels of audio on stage and with a cello that is a quiter instrument. Also, he wanted to minimize bleed from the drum kit.

With the REMIC Microphone, OneRepublic is now able to get better and natural sound from the cello but the artist is also playing better because he is getting a much better feel for his cello.

Dave McMullin explains that he uses a traditional pickup in combination with the REMIC Microphone. Moreover, he utilizes more of the microphone in the blend in comparison with the pickup, because his job is to represent to the players what they are doing during the show, so they can react and play accordingly. Due to our fast transitions in between songs both the pickup and the REMIC are attached to wireless packs.

As a final remark, Dave McMullin mentions the unique fabric cable that all REMIC Microphones are equipped with. The fact that the cable does not make any noise against the body of the instrument is a great advantage.
